For new bloggers, the abundance of information on the web about how to get started can be a good thing and a bad thing. With so much advice available, some articles may contradict others, making it hard to know where to begin. Trust me, I’ve been there!

However, for those who want to throw their hat into the ring, it doesn’t hurt to do some research and sift through the words of wisdom of more experienced writers. You never know when a piece of advice could be the spark that demystifies the process and helps someone get started.

I am most grateful for the hundreds of articles I read in my early days, offering tips, hints, and encouragement. As a result, I was able to try many of the suggested techniques and figure out what worked for me to develop and refine my creative process.

Thirteen years later, I’m still open to trying new techniques. Nonetheless, I love sharing what I learned along the way for the following reasons:

1 – Readers seem to be interested

Of the articles I post, the ones that relate to writing seem to draw a consistent following, whether I discuss blogging or my new adventures in screenwriting. I don’t write my articles for the number of page views they might get, but when there’s clear interest in a topic I enjoy and can add value, why shouldn’t I?

As a bonus, articles like these can offer a behind-the-scenes look at a writer’s life, which could interest readers as well.

2 – Paying it forward

For the many articles I have read about writing, it seems fair to take what I have learned and distill it into advice for aspiring writers. We’re all in this together, and the opportunity to coach, mentor, or offer the right words at the right time makes the journey even more worthwhile.

3 – Encouraging new writers to lend their voice

The reality is that I sincerely appreciate whatever little ripple effect I can help create that might be the turning point for a writer to say, “Maybe I can do that too,” and to put their voice into the world to share new ideas and perspectives.

The fact of the matter is that 13 years later, I still read articles about writing because even though the essentials stay the same, the writing environment changes, whether that means trends in topics, in approaches, or the tools we use.

In turn, writing articles on the topic of writing is my way of paying it forward. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned and the techniques that have become my best practices, which I hope will be helpful and value-added for other creatives.
